IR07. Note-taking for Public Service Interpreters

What is note taking?

Note-taking is a method used by interpreters to jot down information which they are hearing in order to subsequently transfer it into the other language.

Why do note taking?

It enables interpreters to capture the information they have just heard in order to be able to reproduce that same information in the target language perfectly i.e. in the same order as in the original and accurately without omission or additions.

Interp-Right’s Note-Taking Courses are one day training courses conducted by experienced interpreting trainers with a specialism in Note-taking for both conference and public service interpreting.

IR011. Introduction to Translation Skills

Introduction to Translation Skills is a new vocational language course which aims to meet a perceived shortfall in the number of competent self-employed translators for certain language combinations.

The course was devised by City College Birmingham and is accredited by the IoL Educational Trust.

Translation work offers a chance for people with good language skills to work for themselves and take on as much or as little as they can manage. However this requires top quality skills including computer skills. This course is a serious vocational opportunity for someone who feels they could reliably translate certificates, health leaflets, witness statements, posters, letters or marketing information. It is an introduction to the specialist skills expected by agencies today and is an excellent first step to becoming a professional translator.

The course is set at level 3 (A level).

This is a generic course for potential translators with advanced writing skills in their first language and competent reading skills in their source language. It introduces learners to the generic knowledge and skills needed to work as a professional translator in addition to their language specific knowledge and skills.
